We have had an exceptional start to the fishing season here in Ocean City and today it may have just kicked into high gear. Just two days ago Terry Layton caught the first mako shark of the season in 68 degrees of water outside of the Rockpile and I mentioned yesterday that there might just be tunas in it. Well today we found out.
Captain Jeremy Blunt and the crew of the Wrecker out of the Ocean City Fishing Center caught the first bluefin tuna and the first mahi of the season today in the same body of water. Captain Jeremy found 67 degree water fishing 80-120 fathoms in the Poor Man’s Canyon where he put his anglers on a 147 pound mako shark, a 47 pound bluefin tuna, three yellowfin tuna as big as 37 pounds and three mahi. The tuna and mahi were caught on trolled spreader bars and ballyhoo and the mako was caught on bluefish. Congratulations to Captain Jeremy and the crew of Wrecker!

The first yellowfin tuna of the season were caught by the crew of the Tunafowl this morning in the same area that Wrecker was fishing. Josh Ensor, Corbin Ensor and Jeff Rosenkilde went three yellowfins out of four bites at the 000s in the Poor Man’s Canyon where they also had a nine degree temperature break from 58 to 67 degrees around 120 fathoms. Congratulations to the crew of the Tunafowl!
Barb Firestone and Rachelle Bair, both from Dover, PA. had a fantastic day fishing the spring trophy rockfish season on the charter boat MARLI with Captain Mark Hoos and mate Mark Stephens in Solomons, Maryland today. They caught four rockfish on tandem Ole Man Lures parachute rigs in 45? – 60? of water around the HI buoy. The largest fish weighed a whopping 55 lbs and had a length of 53? and a girth of 30 1/2?. Captain Mark says this is his largest rock and the big fish looked like a torpedo coming through the water.
The big bluefish were still snapping at the inlet and in the back bays of Ocean City today. Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break Charters had a good fishing the south jetty today. Captain Jason put his crew on 16 big bluefish while throwing Rattle Traps during the outgoing tide.
My buddy Steve Tapley from my hometown of Bowie, MD sent in a photo of he and his brother Adrian with a nice bluefish they captured in the south bay behind Assateague.
I got a Facebook submission from Phil Thomas who attached a photo saying that he and his girlfriend Kacey caught their first fish of the year at the Oceanic Pier yesterday. The couple only made 5 casts total, but landed four nice bluefish on finger mullet. It bears mentioning that Kacey caught three of the four fish. Thanks for the submission!
