Deal Proposal with Bahamas Article Courtesy: nassauguardian.com | By: Candia Dames | Originally Published: November 1, 2016The government of The Bahamas has given the green light to its embassy in Beijing, China, to further pursue a possible agriculture and fisheries partnership with the Chinese that promises to pump $2.1 billion into the Bahamian economy over 10 years, The Nassau Guardian can confirm. This would be an equal partnership between Bahamians and the People’s Republic of China or its substantial representatives. According to the proposal, the initiative will entail the incorporation of 100 Bahamian companies under the Companies Act of 1992 and each of the 100 companies will be owned 50-50 by both China and by Bahamians or Bahamian entities. The initiative would see China or its substantive representatives contributing to the 100 participating companies the $2.1 billion in cash (for working capital), agricultural and farming equipment as well as skilled expertise. If the proposal is approved, the Bahamas government would lease with an option to renew the lease for additional years, to all 100 companies 10,000 acres of Crown land in Andros. Lease options will be available to each company for an additional 100 acres, provided certain clearly defined performance benchmarks are achieved. The Bahamas government would also grant to each of the companies fishing licenses consistent with existing Bahamian laws.

Pioneer in the Rock Shrimp Fishing Industry and Founding Member of Bonefish & Tarpon Trust Pass AwayRIP Rodney Thompson of Titusville, FL Rodney raced boats in the early 1960’s for Carl Kiekhaefer who was the founder of Kiekkhaefer Mercury Marine (which later became Mercury Marine). A pioneer in the fiberglass boat-building industry, Rodney built the world’s first fiberglass commercial shrimp boat. The boat was initially panned by the traditional shrimpers who said ‘If God wanted boats to be made out of fiberglass he would have made fiberglass trees.’ He was actively involved in all aspects of the domestic commercial fishing industry from manufacturing commercial fishing boats to pioneering the rock shrimp industry, operating seafood restaurants and markets. He started T-Craft Boats, Thompson Trawlers, Offshore 30, Thompson Industries, Sand Point Inn, Pelican Point Inn, Ponce Seafood, Dixie Crossroads Seafood Restaurant, Cape Canaveral Shrimp Company and Wild Ocean Seafood Market. Founding member of Bonefish & Tarpon Trust passes away It was with great sadness we received news yesterday that Captain Bill Curtis had passed away. A fishing legend and founding board member of BTT, Captain Bill was a renowned flats guide who pioneered bonefish on fly in Biscayne Bay. He is credited with helping to develop modern-day skiffs and inventing the poling platform and indispensable “Bimini Twist” knot. BTT and the sport of fly-fishing owe much to his ingenuity and to his passion for the flats fisheries he helped protect. BTT sends condolences to the family and all who feel this loss.
