Northeastern U.S. Update – Tuna are Offshore Right Now!

Tuna are offshore right now! Therefore we are providing another complimentary analysis of the overview of the ocean conditions during the week of May 9^th to remind you that you cannot catch fish sitting at the dock waiting to read about it from social media. We are again focusing on the northeast offshore region from Cape Hatteras to Virginia, New Jersey, New York to Massachusetts including all offshore canyons to provide some motivation to get offshore. We have included some spot sea surface temperatures (°F) of the main water masses and have located the main eddy features with arrows indicating the flow direction of the water. Bottom line is, although some of the waters appear a bit cool for an abundance of yellowfin tuna, we have already been receiving early reports of yellowfin, bluefin and bigeye tunas being caught and spotted in the 60°F to 64°F waters along with mako, thresher and blue sharks. Oceanographer: Tech Might have Saved Teens Lost at Sea

On July 24, 2015 Perry Cohen and Austin Stephanos, both 14 years old, went fishing. They took their small craft out Jupiter Inlet and were never found again.

Two days later, Bobby Smith reported flying over the area where Perry and Austin were missing, reported seeing what might have been their boat, and possibly one or both of them clinging to the wreckage.

According to Chris Bonanno of FLORIDA TODAY, Smith radioed in the latitude and longitude of the sighting, but the teens were not seen by Coast Guard search and rescue missions.

Their boat was found in the Sargasso Sea by the Norwegian vessel Edda Fjord on March 18, 2016. No surprise to physical oceanographers that boats entrained into the Florida Current are advected into the North Atlantic gyre circulating around Bermuda.

Could the loss of Austin and Perry have been prevented by existing technology, called High Frequency Radar (HFR)?
