A 39-year-old woman has died after being attacked by a black marlin fish while snorkeling at Tanjung Karang Beach in Donggala, Central Sulawesi, on Saturday.

Liena, the victim, had been snorkeling in shallow waters when the fish approached and attacked her with its sharp bill.

“We immediately got her out of water and took her to Kabelota General Hospital in Donggala. She died at the hospital,” said M. Ridwan, a friend of the victim, who also witnessed the incident.

Abubakar Mide, the diving instructor who had accompanied Liena, her husband and their friends while they were snorkeling, said that the black marlin that attacked the victim was the size of a man’s arm. Abubakar tried to get Liena out of the water as the fish approached but it had moved too quickly.
