ROFFS™OCEANOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS FOR STRAITS OF FLORIDA

UPDATED ON TUES. JUNE 11, 2013 FOR  TUES. P.M. & WED. FISHING ONLY

FOR THE CHLOE MCCARDEL TEAM SWIM

We were able to see this area clearly today. Arrows indicate the direction of the flow, but not the speed. The main body of the Gulf Stream has an estimated early morning sea surface temperature of 85.3°F-84.8°F. Overall the ocean circulation remains favorable for the swim. The relatively large clockwise rotating pool of water centered near 83°30’W & 23°30’N northwest of Havana  has remained relatively stationary. However, the eastern part is being pulled eastward suggesting that this feature is starting to decay and weaken. This decay is important as Chloe will NOT be swimming against a westward current north of Havana. It appears that the currents along the northern coast of Cuba are moving eastward in a laminar flow. We are carefully watching the two counterclockwise eddy features south of Key West centered near 81°30’W & 24°15’N and 81°45’W & 24°20’N with 81.0°F  and 82.2°F water at their centers respectively. We are anticipating that these eddy features will move eastward toward the upper Florida Keys over the next 24-36 hours. We do not want these features to combine into a single much larger counter-clockwise eddy that would push current toward Chloe when she approaches 24°00-24°10’N. This area is circled in black in the second graphic. We anticipate that there will be a series of smaller (1-2 mile in diameter) counter-clockwise eddy features moving along the northern boundary of the Gulf Stream in this zone (82°30’-81°30’N & 24°00-24°10’N) that will be problematic as the are moving along with the Gulf Stream Current and it will be difficult to avoid them. If we are lucky she will be able to use one to help push her northward as opposed to fighting it. We will advise you more precisely as you approach this area. It will be critical to have the additional vessel searching north of her for these features when indicated.  The ocean models are in agreement with our observations and experience.
